A look at the UP in 2005: Modoc line clean-up extra, continued

The last U.P. train on the Modoc line

Arriving at Stronghold siding, the locomotive and its three-man crew cruises the length of the stored cars to find five bad order cars that they are to leave behind as well as to scan the cars and track for any problems or obstacles to movement.  Two trucks from the mechanical department are waiting for them, just in case something needs to be repaired before movement.  Then the 300 backs up, a switch is thrown and the engine heads into the east siding to grab the five CNW gondolas stored there...

...and they are pulled out onto the main track...

...then pushed into the west siding a to make a joint with the first cut of stored boxcars...

...the air connection is made...

...and the train backs up to pick up the other three cuts of cars after the air builds up.
