May 10-11, 1984

The Locale. Exploration route highlighted in yellow. Map not to scale.

Notes and Points of Interest:

  • Kelso Dunes, located just southwest of Kelso. On a quiet night, sand slipping down the sides of the dunes resonates with surreal music.

  • Near Amboy is the Amboy Crater National Natural Landmark

  • There is a solar-powered pay telephone (and nothing else) in the middle of the desert at Lanfair (Update: The phone was removed in 2000, apparently due to concerns that it had become too popular.  Apparently, the Mojave Perserve Rangers were concerned that the number of tourists looking to visit the phone posed a grave and present danger to the ecology of the Mojave Preserve. This pay phone has quite a following.  People called it from all over the world just to see if anyone would pick up.  There are several websites dedicated to the Lanfair phone booth; here is one of them: http://deuceofclubs.com/moj/mojave.htm)

  • High ground clearance vehicle recommended from Kelso to Landfair through Cedar Canyon - Old Mojave Road. This is a dirt road subject to flash flooding. The road is shown as a four wheel drive road on maps but I didn't have any trouble in my 1976 Toyota Corolla.

  • If you would like to take this trip, take along a good map and plenty of water and be prepared for anything! Remember that the desert gets very hot during the day and cold at night.
