General Electric 44 ton switcher
Drawing #44tonner

G.E. 44 Tonner

General Electric's light duty switcher, found in shipyards, industrial yards and railroad yards throughout the world.  Boasting between 350 and 410 horsepower provided by two Caterpillar or Cummins diesel engines, 371 of these switchers were produced from 1940 to 1956 and many are still in daily operation.  One reason for their popularity may have been that they could be crewed by one person -- union regulations required a two-person crew on locomotives of 45 tons or more.
