In January, 1981, my first child was born. By May, she had a ticket to ride the train behind ex-SP Daylight 4449 from Portland to Eugene, Oregon on that segment of its trip to Rail Fair '81. |

An Unremembered Location turns out to be Lompoc, CA |

Photo # 3388-2
Q: I don't recall where these two photos of GP9 3388 and a yard switcher (possibly 2545?) working were taken -- anybody know?

Photo # 3388-1
A: Both photos are on the Lompoc Branch at the yard.
Thats Moore Mill and Lumber to the right of the boxcars on the right hand
side. A little side note if you look at the further most boxcar, it was
used as a storage car for a car man who applied plywood sheeting to the
insides of the cars that were to be loaded with pallet loads of Diatomaceous
Earth at either Grefco or Manville. I guess the companies didn't want the
bags of dirt torn by the rough insides of some of the cars. It was a S.P.
40 foot car.
Your photos brought back that memory, as I met the guy on occassion and he
was the one that told me to go out to Surf as there were lots more boxcars,
all 40 footers, set out there. It was a glorious time to shoot all the
various roads that came to town.
So it looks like #3388-2 and 3388-1 were taken in the Lompoc Yard. Glad you
got them and shared them!!! FYI,
Moore Mill and Lumber is located on North D Street, they used to get boxcar
loads of lumber a while back, until they had to buy whole cars of the same
type, that ended that.
Best Regards,
John Roskoski
